This book was such a struggle for me. I did not like the writing style at all. It seemed like it had a lot of unnecessary filler words that made the sentences go on and on. It seemed cluttered and run on is the best I could explain it. But I know that there are plenty of people that swear it is one of the best books ever written. To each their own. Charlize Theron.
And yet, there are still some quotes that stuck out to me.
“The more I see of the world, the more I am dissatisfied with it; and everyday confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human characters, and of the little dependence that can be placed on the appearance of merit or sense.”
It’s easy to understand that way of viewing things when the world has come to where it is now. Personally, I can’t stand watching the news because it is only showing you the bad in the world. You also can’t go anywhere anymore without fearing for your life. Movie theaters, concerts, even just the grocery store.
As a music enthusiast that loves going to concerts, it’s sad to me that you can’t avoid thinking, “Well what if someone is going to lose it and start shooting people?” You start looking around while trying to enjoy a concert trying to decide where a gunman might be. But, that’s where we are now in this world.
Moving on from this negativity….
“There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me.”
Everyone should channel that inner courage. Don’t be afraid to be who you are. Life also becomes so much easier when you learn to not let others opinions sway you. In my experience, being yourself and not putting on a fake front let’s you make real and true friendships and relationships. If your friendship is based on going out and drinking all nights of the week that you feel pressured into when you’d rather be curled up with a book in fuzzy socks, do they even know you?
I’m not trying to attack anyone’s friendships or beliefs, i’m just basically word vomiting my thoughts while reading into a blog. Purely to get cluttered thoughts out of my brain.
I think everyone should have a little of that stubbornness. To cling to your beliefs even when others attack them. To cling to things that make you happy even in a dark world. To cling to your fuzzy socks even if they’re mocked by others, because they are the real heroes keeping your toes warm.
Be stubborn. Be yourself. Be happy.
